What was the real score in 1973 when movies of four superstars clashed in the box-office? Here’s credible writer Nestor Torre’s take on this:
Beyond the Box-Office
by Nestor U. Torre Jr.
These past two weeks have been a giddy time for the local film industry. Three big films starring four of the country’s biggest superstars have been playing in practically half of all the theaters in Greater Manila, and competing with each other for top box-office returns. Lipad, Darna, Lipad! Started it all by billing itself as “The Blockbuster of the Year,” and claiming a first-day take of P70,000. The producers of Erap Is My Guy countered a few days later by announcing that, other claims of blockbusterhood notwithstanding, Erap was, in fact, the box-office champ, with more than P400,000 in gate receipts after just four days’ showing. Only Esteban chose to keep out of the word-war.
