Superfan Mandy Diaz with the Superstar

Superfan
by Film Angel

Generations of Filipinos have lined up for movies and shows of the Superstar, Nora Aunor. Legions of fans have bought her albums. A devoted few followed her every move. From among these avid, passionate fans, none was as obsessed as Armando ‘Mandy’ Diaz Jr.

Superfan is based on an essay written by Diaz for the book Si Nora Aunor sa mga Noranian: Mga Paggunita at Pagtatapat, edited by Nestor De Guzman (Quezon City: Milflores Publishing Inc., 2005). In the essay titled Himala, Diaz narrated his miraculous devotion to Nora. He started adoring her when he was only 6 years old. The decades-long obsession with the Superstar resulted in a humongous collection of Aunor records and memorabilia. 47 volumes of clippings chronicle the odyssey of Nora from Albay to San Francisco Bay. 10 photo albums capture the highs and lows of the petite actress.

Himala Revisited: Nora Aunor in Vienna, Virginia, for the Special Screening of the Film

by Dino Dela Rosa

Vienna, Virginia--The one and only Superstar Nora Aunor was here to attend the special screening of her film “Himala,” the 1982 Ishmael Bernal classic in which she won the best actress award at the Metro Manila Filmfest. She played the faith healer Elsa and her riveting performance is considered one of her best performances. This film was sponsored by the Filipino Ministry of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church and MOWELFUND Philippines where Boots Anson-Roa is the Executive Director. Boots and Nora both starred in the memorable drama, Paru-parong Itim (1973).

In 1967, a 14-year-old contestant from Iriga, Ma. Leonora “Nora” Villamayor, entered the then-popular singing competition Tawag Ng Tanghalan. She stood out from the other contestants for her powerful vocals, which the judges and the viewers found amazing for someone so young. She also had confidence and poise. During this time, she was living in Manila with her auntie Belen Aunor, the sister of Nora’s mother, Mamay Tuying Villamayor. For fourteen consecutive weeks, she was the weekly champion and she was ecstatic when she was proclaimed the Grand Champion.

The producers of Sampaguita Pictures took notice of her and put her under contract and christened her Nora Aunor. For a couple of years, she was cast in supporting roles in forgettable films. But in 1970, she was cast in a musical-comedy which became a box-office hit, she was paired with a handsome newcomer named Tirso Cruz III. Their second film, also a musical-comedy, was also a hit. The public took notice of this dusky, diminutive singing sensation and immediately became fascinated with her. A Star was born! Nora Aunor broke the color barrier in the movie industry when before her the tall, fair-skinned mestizas were the leading ladies (Susan Roces, Amalia Fuentes and Gloria Romero).

From the ’70s to the late ’80s, La Aunor reigned supreme as the movie queen making one box-office hit after another. She also conquered TV with her long-running musical variety show, Superstar and the drama series Makulay na Daigdig ni Nora. It was in her drama series where she honed her now effortless acting skills. Her director, Lupita Aquino-Kashiwahara, taught her different acting skills. And Nora was a fast learner.

She received critical notice when she won her first best actress award for And God Smiled at Me (1972). She finally won her first actress award from FAMAS for Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos in 1977. By this time she had revealed that she is an actress of extraordinary depth. Since then she was won countless awards.

In 2004, after she did her highly successful U.S. concert tour, she fell in love with San Francisco and decided to try living there. She realized that she enjoyed living there, having some privacy and being Nora Aunor, a private citizen, something she hasn’t enjoyed doing since she joined showbiz at a young age. But she still did a series of concerts for her many U.S-based fans. Last year she became a permanent resident.

When she attended the special screening here in Vienna, Va. on August 13-14, her many fans in the Washington D.C. metro area came to see her. For two nights, she mesmerized everyone with her legendary golden voice as well as her brilliant performance in Himala. Her fans was so thrilled to see her since she rarely comes here to perform, the last time she was here is when she had her concert, “Nora-Kuh: The Power Of Two,” at the Lisner Auditorium.

Her iconic presence at the special screening of Himala proved yet again that after than more than four decades in the industry, Nora Aunor is still at the top of her game and stil the one and only Superstar. There hasn’t been anyone like her before her or since.

Superstar Nora Aunor’s favorite filmmaker Mario O’hara is one of the five artists/writers to receive the 2009 Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas award from the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL). The director is deemed worthy of the award “for his dramatic films of meritorious quality, through which he and his world view poke at the conscience of a society that closes its eyes on the surrounding mire of oppression and poverty.”

The full citation reads:

For his dramatic films of meritorious quality, through which he and his world view poke at the conscience of a society that closes its eyes on the surrounding mire of oppression and poverty; and his art that seeks the realization of justice within an order that is hopefully humane and democratic. His writing has given face and body to characters that are subject to the most intense anxieties of contemporary history—those brought about by the wars and conflicts that continue to shape the Filipino. At the same time, his writing points to a path leading to the creation of a society that exceedingly respects human dignity.

Isinilang noong  19 Abril 1946  sa Zamboanga, Mindanao. Isa siyang premyadong direktor, prodyuser at manunulat ng pelikulang Filipino. In Still Moving: The Film and Media Collections of the Museum of Modern Art by Steven Higgins, New York: The Museum of Modern Art, 2006, p. 279

Lino Brocka made more than fifty films in a career that lasted barely twenty years. Starting as a script supervisor, he made his directorial debut in 1970 with Wanted: Perfect Mother. After a short series of commercial studio releases, Brocka withdrew from filmmaking altogether, returning to the business in 1974 with his own short-lived production company, CineManila, which folded two years later. From 1976 until his death in 1991, Brocka juggled commercial and personal projects, gaining an international reputation as the finest Philippine director of his generation. Bona, released in 1980, is perhaps his best–regarded work. The title character is a young, starstruck schoolgirl (played by Nora Aunor) who falls in love with an aging actor (Phillip Salvador) and becomes his servant. She waits on him loyally in his decrepit shack, receiving nothing for her labors but the privilege of being his slave. When the actor decides he has had enough of her and attempts to toss her aside, Bona retaliates in a wholly unexpected, utterly justified fit of violent rage. As with many of his other independently made films, Bona reveals Brocka's uncanny ability to join the personal and the political, to locate the overarching social statement in an intimate, deeply individualized gesture. He gave voice to an enormous swath of the Filipino population, one that had previously been given little attention by the nation's filmmakers, most of whom were more concerned with the dissemination of fantasy than with immersion into real life. In so doing, he became a hero to an entire generation of filmmakers in the Pacific Rim and beyond.

Nora Aunor in Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos

The Five Best Actresses of Philippine Movies

by Boy C. De Guia
January 26, 1981
Movie Romances Magazine

(1) NORA AUNOR & HILDA KORONEL
(2) Elizabeth Oropesa
(3) Amy Austria
(4) Pinky de Leon
(5) Gina Alajar / Chanda Romero/ Charo Santos

Nasa iisang kategorya sina Nora at Hilda. Mahirap silang habulin. Mahirap silang talunin. . . Among younger ones, magkagrupo talaga sina Gina, Amy at Cherie. Same category naman sina Chanda, Pinky at Beth.

            (1) Nora Aunor / Hilda Koronel

            (2) -------
            (3) Gina Alajar/ Amy Austria/ Cherie Gil
            (4) Pinky de Leon/ Chanda Romero/ Beth Bautista
            (5) Charo Santos / Rio Locsin

********

JESSE EJERCITO: “Mas marami palang magagaling na aktres kaysa actor . . .

            (1) Nora Aunor
            (2) Hilda Koronel
            (3) Elizabeth Oropesa
            (4) Amy Austria
            (5) Gina Alajar
            (6) Charo Santos
            (7) Chanda Romero
            (8) Beth Bautista
            (9) Daria Ramirez
            (10) Pinky de Leon

********

ANITA LINDA: “Basta, magagaling silang lahat!”

            (1) Nora Aunor
            (2) Hilda Koronel
            (3) Pinky de Leon
            (4) Vilma Santos
            (5) Beth Bautista/ Elizabeth Oropesa

********

PIO DE CASTRO: “To be a good actress is to be able to portray different roles effectively…”

            (1) Hilda Koronel
            (2) Nora Aunor
            (3) Chanda Romero
            (4) Pinky de Leon
            (5) Daria Ramirez/ Elizabeth Oropesa

*******

            (1) Nora Aunor
            (2) Hilda Koronel
            (3) Elizabeth Oropesa
            (4) Amy Austria
            (5) Chanda Romero
            (6) Beth Baustista
            (7) Gina Alajar

*******

EDDIE GARCIA: “I’ve worked with them, my choices I mean, and they’re just wonderful as co-stars. They inspire me not only because they’re good-looking but . . . they’re good actresses.”

            (1) Hilda Koronel
            (2) Nora Aunor
            (3) Elizabeth Oropesa/ Amy Austria
            (4) Charo Santos
            (5) Gina Alajar
            (6) Lorna Tolentino
            (7) Alma Moreno

********

            (1) Nora Aunor
            (2) Hilda Koronel
            (3) Amy Austria
            (4) Gina Alajar
            (5) Charo Santos

********

ZENAIDA AMADOR: “I only have three choices, and they are equally good. I’ve seen them perform, I’ve worked with them, and they’re consistently effective.”

(1) Nora Aunor/ Hilda Koronel/ Pinky de Leon

********

CYNTHIA PINEDA: “I’ve been a Filipino movie follower since I was 10, so familiar na ako sa mga artista natin. ‘Yung choices ko, pag may pelikula sila, I really take time out to watch their movies, dahil alam kong kahit na ano lang ‘yon, mapapaganda na ng acting nila.”

            (1) Nora Aunor
            (2) Hilda Koronel
            (3) Charo Santos
            (4) Elizabeth Oropesa
            (5) Chanda Romero
            (6)Beth Bautista

The Best Actresses of Philippine Movies

(During the Last Five Years, 1978-1983)

by Boy C. De Guia
August 19, 1983
Modern Romances Magazine

Ayon sa napagkasunduan naming point system (at hindi popularity votes) na resulta ng pagkakapili ng sampung inampalan, ang Five Best Actresses of Philippine Movies (during the last five years) ay ang mga sumusunod (strictly in order of importance):

(1) NORA AUNOR
(2) Hilda Koronel
(3) Vilma Santos
(4) Gina Alajar
(5) Charito Solis

DIGNA SANTIAGO. Sabi ng hindi-na-gaanong-aktibong prodyuser, “My decision is relative to what I have seen.”

(1) Nora Aunor: “She’s consistently good that it gets to be boring already. Seriously now, Guy can tackle any role even if she’s not acting.”
(2) Hilda Koronel: “She’s brilliant in spite of what they say.”
(3) Gina Alajar: “Very convincing.”
(4) Vilma Santos: “She’s good, period.”

********

TONY TUVIERA. “My basic idea of good acting is communication . . . You’ve got to be pleasant to look at; pag maganda ang artista, madali itong makapag-communicate.”

(1) Hilda Koronel: “What a face. Kaya kahit ano ang irate, puwede. She reminds me of Faye Dunaway. She has the most expressive face; kung magkaminsan nga’y overdone. Pag nasa screen si Hilda, it’s as though she’s not acting at all.”
(2) Nora Aunor: “She delivers a message without using glamour. Magaling talaga.”
(3) Vilma Santos: “She delivers what the role calls; but her over-all personality somehow limits her performance.”
(4) Charito Solis: “I’ve always admired her, ever since I started to appreciate female acting. I call her my ‘First Actress.’ She’s versatile.”

********

BERNARDO BERNARDO

(1) Nora Aunor: “There’s truth in her acting, nakukuha ang audience; very sympathetic; her acting goes beyond physical looks.”
(2) Vilma Santos: “She always tries to be on top of a situation; she underplays; she oozes with sex appeal on screen kahit hindi maghubad; such star quality!”
(3) Gina Alajar: “She’s not a typical movie goddess but she gets away with roles through sheer talent; she has a grand-scale personality.”
(4) Chanda Romero.: “An intelligent actress; she acts through her eyes; she underplays; she knows her craft more than anybody else; she has a third eye, a sixth sense about anything yet she comes out naturally.”
(5) Hilda Koronel: “Classic beauty that lends itself even in social realism; beauty and talent combined; triumph of underacting.”

********

TONY SANTOS SR.

(3) Hilda Koronel: “Kumbinasyon yan nina Guy at Vi.”
‘yan!”
(5) Charito Solis: “Siya ang dapat tawaging Most Durable Actress. Sumasabak kahit anong panahon ng artista.”

**********

NESTOR TORRE JR. “Number One silang lahat.”

(1) Nora Aunor
(1) Hilda Koronel
(1) Liza Lorena
(1) Vilma Santos
(1) Charito Solis

*********

ZENAIDA LATORRE. “There are so many competent actresses, but we are talking of the best, right? There are a lot of stars whom I like, I admire, some of them I love, but their acting has not reached the range of Charito and Nora.”

(1) Charito Solis: “She has taken care of herself well both personally and professionally; her range as an actress is unbeatable; she’s powerful; creative, has nuances over and above the directorial demands; versatile; such presence.”
(2) Nora Aunor: “Raw talent, instinctive; she always gives soul-acting; she’s almost the same as Charito but the latter is more experienced.”

********

PETE LACABA. “They inspire me to create better characters.”

(3) Hilda Koronel / Vilma Santos: “They’re good but limited; I mean, masyado silang magaganda kaya nalilimitahan . .

********

NESTOR CUARTERO

(1) Nora Aunor: “The ultimate actress.”
(2) Gina Alajar: “Such intensity!”
(3) Hilda Koronel: “Believable.”
(4) Chanda Romero: “Versatile.”
(5) Vilma Santos: “Versatile.”

********

FANNY SERRANO

(1) Vilma Santos: “She’s different in every role . . .”
(2) Nora Aunor: “She can act and project through her eyes; type ko ang kanyang underacting.”

(3) Gina Alajar: “Combination nina Vilma at Nora.”
(4) Charito Solis: “Her professionalism counts a lot; ‘yung tipo bang nagpapataba o nagpapayat siya for a role.”
(5) Hilda Koronel: “Restrained acting but full of energy; I like her voice.”

********

ROSEMARIE INOCENCIO

(4) Gina Alajar: “Para siyang pinagsamang Nora at Hilda.”
