NORA AUNOR as NATIONAL ARTIST

Nora, Vilma & Dolphy as National Artists, not Carlo Caparas!
By Wilson Lee Flores (The Philippine Star) Updated August 02, 2009 12:00 AM

Why not him?: Many have asked why Dolphy was not on the list.

Manila, Philippines - In politics, an absurdity is not a handicap. — Napoleon Bonaparte

My choice early in life was either to be a piano player in a whorehouse or a politician. And to tell the truth, there’s hardly any difference. — US President Harry Truman

One of the horrors I read in the July 30 front-page of The Philippine STAR was that of ever-controversial President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo allegedly meddling in the National Artists selection process with four of her own personal choices. In the past, a president could insert only one personal choice.

National Artist for Literature, Unyon ng mga Manunulat ng Pilipinas (UMPIL) leader Virgilio Almario said: “Nabababoy yung sistema. Pati ako, bumaba yung tingin ko sa sarili ko (The system is being bastardized, even I look down upon myself now).”

I believe this is a travesty worse than a president allegedly lying in her State of the Nation (SONA) address!

Why not mars ravelo or larry alcala?

I’m not privy to the selection process, but as an ardent movie fan, I’m aghast at the selection of Carlo Caparas as National Artist. Why not the great actress Superstar Nora Aunor, why not “King of Comedy” Dolphy, whom Senator Manny Villar told S magazine he’s rooting for to become a National Artist? Why not the multi-awarded “Star for all Seasons” Vilma Santos? Why not the talented and multi-awarded movie director Mike de Leon? Why not even the painter Malang?

If President GMA’s idea of art is comics — which I’m also a fan of — why not honor the late Mars Ravelo or the late inimitable Larry Alcala whose fascinating works I sorely miss in the pages of the STAR?

If there’s one logical incentive for me to heed the clamor of my six secretaries and my Labrador Retriever Duchess to run for president, it is so that I can nominate the magnificent and yet unequalled Nora Aunor as National Artist!

This is not a joke. Comedian Leo Martinez, who often parodies our shamelessly corrupt politicians on TV and film, said that when he first heard news of GMA’s choice of Carlo Caparas, he really thought it was a joke. Whew, it seems the joke is on us!

Before I forget, this writer salutes the artists and scholars for this year nominating as National Artist the late filmmaker Manuel Conde. I have not yet seen his movies, but I surely admire and hope that some groups would exhibit again such interesting films by him like the 1950 Genghis Khan and the 1959 comedy Juan Tamad Goes to Congress. If I may add, can somebody do a modern-day sequel entitled Juan Tamad Goes Around the World to parody our legislators who love to travel in useless and costly junkets purportedly “in aid of legislation”?

Like emperor caligula naming his horse as consul?

Sources told this writer that the respected musician Dr. Ramon Santos, head of the UP Center of Ethnomusicology, was removed as a nominee and that GMA allegedly substituted four of her own choosing instead of the usual one presidential choice. This is another case of dagdag-bawas, one bawas (minus) and too much dagdag (additions)!

Who was that controversial Roman leader —was it Emperor Caligula who once named his horse as a consul? By the way, I wish to clarify that I am not comparing anyone to a horse, neither am I saying that our President is like Caligula, what I’m just stressing here is the controversial and perhaps whimsical nature of presidential or imperial privilege if perceived to be utilized improperly or unwisely.

If Carlo Caparas as moviemaker can be a National Artist, I think Mother Lily Monteverde of Regal Films is more deserving with her over 200 films and not a few of which are classics like Sister Stella L, starring Vilma Santos, and Manila By Night directed by Ishmael Bernal. I have nothing personally against Caparas and don’t even know him, but I believe there are many other much more deserving artists.

Caparas’s last TV series on GMA 7, incongruously entitled Ang Babaeng Ihinugot sa Aking Tadyang and starring Marian Rivera, failed even in the TV ratings. His other works are comic book characters Bakekang, Totoy Bato, Tasya Fantasya and Gagambino. In fairness, I congratulate him, and like his Panday story, which was made into iconic films by the late National Artist for Film and “King of Philippine Movies” Fernando Poe, Jr.

Former UP Dean Prof. Virgilio Almario, who sat in the final selection committee and is therefore privy to the nominees that were originally submitted to the President, said, “Wilson, artist

Selection for new National Artist is on June 2010. By that time, we have our new president. So please intensify Ms. Nora Aunor's nomination. She deserve the award more than anyone else.

It's just a matter of time. Sooner or later, Nora will be recognised as a National Artist. She deserves to be more than any actress of her generation. It will be a travesty if someone gets it before Nora because of their position or side with the goverment. The sooner the better though. If only this year...I do hope so...

At last, my wife and I have met Nora Aunor. Nora was here in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on Mother's Day (May 9, 2010) for her concert. However, her doctor from the US has recommended that she has to rest her voice for at least 6 months, she was not able to sing and she just narrated her life story with video clips. She apologized to the fans and she cried on the stage because she cannot sing for us. Anyway, the fans were okay and accepted her explanations and apology. After 1 hour of video clips, she went to her room in the hotel and changed clothes and went down again for autograph signing. My wife was able to share to Nora the love of Jesus and I gave her a christian book and I inserted some dollars. She thanked and gave me a big hug. I was a fan of Nora since 1969 and this is the first time I talked and hugged her. My wife, two family friends and I went home very happy although she was not able to sing because of her problem with her throat and voice, because the greatest actress and the superstar of the Philippine cinema talked and hugged us.

Truly indeed, she is very humble, very charismatic, very accommodating and she still beautiful. She was able to sign all my dvd classical movies of Nora and CD. She said to audience that she is wiling to come back to Edmonton even for free to compensate to what happened. She is very sincere and even showed to the producers the medical certificate of her doctor from the US that Nora should rest her voice. She is really indeed one in a million and God has really blessed this woman. We have no regrets and we accepted her explanations. I pray that God will always protect, will give her wisdom and good health for Nora.

GMA TV

If the Palace imagines that the current uproar over its outrageous selection of some dagdag National Artists is going to blow over quickly, here’s more proof that it won’t.

And that’s because a week has passed and we’ve yet to receive a satisfactory explanation from the Palace for its actions, beyond fuzzy generalizations like “there was a process” and “they deserve it.”

What process, we again demand to know. Who nominated whom when and for what? At what level of deliberation were the four new names introduced, and one from the original list of four dropped?

What’s this “honors” super-committee that Malacañang suddenly came up with to justify its choices – who are its members, and what are their credentials?

When even the Chair of the CCP Board of Trustees, the highly respected Emily Abrera, denies that the CCP knew anything about the mystery nominations and expresses surprise over the existence of the “honors” committee, something fishy is clearly afoot.

Did I hear NCCA Chair Vilma Labrador right when she was interviewed on TV? “Cecile [Guidote-Alvarez, the NCCA’s executive director and GMA’s cultural adviser] didn’t even know she was being nominated,” protesteth the lady.

Then how come we, the cultural community, learned about the nomination even a week before the formal announcement, having been forewarned about it by text messages from within the highest echelons of the cultural bureaucracy itself?

Are we supposed to believe that in this country where secrets have a shelf life of five minutes, the NCCA Executive Director had no inkling of the good fortune about to befall her?

If there’s something I hate, it’s being taken for a fool, even if I happen to be dumb and clueless about some very basic and important things in life, like the care of dogs and infants.

But I didn’t get to write 20 books and as many screenplays (a dozen of them for the late National Artist Lino Brocka but none so far, unfortunately, for Carlo J. Caparas) without some notion of how people’s minds and hearts work.

What were they thinking?

Tell me it isn’t so, but the irrepressible scriptwriter in me keeps coming up with this thought-balloon: “Let’s brazen this out. If we don’t get this now under GMA, we never will. In a few weeks, all will be well, people won’t care, and we can go to our graves in the Libingan ng mga Bayani.”

On the record, Mrs. Alvarez’s position seems to be, “If you don’t like what happened, then get the law changed. Besides, I deserve it.”

A Palace spokesman – stepping out of his supposed specialization in economic matters – was quoted as saying that “Since Mrs. Alvarez was nominated outside of the NCCA, there was no violation of delicadeza.”

I’m sorry, my friend, but that’s not how delicadeza works.

It emanates from the receiver of the boon, from his or her sense of decorum and good taste.

Propriety dictates that one decline or forgo an honor that could well be deserved, but may also be clouded with suspicion because of one’s position – which explains the dismay and the sadness I’ve heard from many of Mrs. Alvarez’s longtime friends in theater over her adamant embrace of something she could have waited for to ripen in its own good time.

“I deserve it” or “She deserves it” just doesn’t cut it.

The same thing could be said by or of a dozen other outstanding perennial candidates for the NAA – who, however, don’t have the good luck of having the President’s ear on matters of culture.

A lawyer-friend provided me with this apt and useful quotation to ponder: “Non omne quod licet honestum est – not everything that is allowed is honorable.”

Mr. Caparas’s reaction, on the other hand, has been a blithe “Why not me? I’m young and alive.”

Young and alive or not, there are scores of other more deserving filmmakers, film artists, and real graphic artists – Dolphy, Nora Aunor, Celso Ad. Castillo, Mike de Leon, Malang, and Larry Alcala being just a few among them.

And if you think that Caparas has done the komiks world a heroic favor by breaking some elitist barrier, think again. How can a non-illustrator even be a National Artist for the Visual Arts?

Last Thursday, when we were both interviewed on ANC’s “Media in Focus,” he tried to offer proof of his drawing skills – which still doesn’t change the fact that he didn’t illustrate the comic serials he scripted.

(For anyone still in doubt about the quality of Carlo J’s d

Dear Ate Guy,

In 1989, I was then in Grade 3, I can still recall that I am watching an AWARDS Night and you are a Recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award, when you were delivering your Speech, I really don't know why I am crying, tears are dropping in my eyes when you are delivering your speech, maybe you are so effective and AFFECTIVE to all the individuals who are watching you, you are indeed a "BIOLOGICAL ENIGMA !". You are so full of CHARISMA ! You are truly a SUPERSTAR !!!! Unknowingly, as time progresses, I discovered that I am already a NORANIAN !

When I was in Grade School, I always aspire for Excellence in terms of Academics, you are always in my mind ATE GUY, whenever I got low grades, I remember your lowest points in your life, your cyclones, your hurricanes and on how you manage to stand up once again amidst your Trials and Tribulations and how you manage to face the World once again with a GREAT SMILE ! In other words, you became my SUPERSTAR in the DARKNESS of the Night ! Despite of great poverty, I always manage to standout among the rest, still thinking of you ATE GUY, that you always STAND OUT because of your PECULIARITIES and CHARM and of course with your SPECTACULAR ARTISTRY ! In Grade School i graduated as the Class Valedictorian, you know what ATE GUY?, when I am delivering my VALEDICTORY ADDRESS, you are still in my psyche, I am imagining myself that I am NORA AUNOR, the SUPERSTAR delivering her Speech in an AWARDS NIGHT !

When I entered High School, I transferred and enrolled in a School runned by Nuns, my classmates knew that I am a Transferee and a Valedictorian, being a neophyte I suffered from Rejections, Difficulties, Discrimination and my Classmates are Pulling me Down to the Lowest Bottom Rock. A lot of times I am crying that I realized how hard and bitter is Life. With God and you ATE GUY as my inspirations, I remain to be humble and Kind to them, I imitated you ATE GUY ! that even others are pulling you down you always kill them with GREAT KINDNESS and with full of HUMILITY !!! You are indeed my Idol Ate Guy ! I can still recall that I do have lots of admirers and fans just like you Ate Guy, I imitated you most of the time, I always throw my admirers with Great Smile and a Big Wave ! I even said to myself that some chapters of my life is like of Nora. When I graduated in High School I graduated With Honors and with the highest number of Special Awards, just like before I still have Ate Guy in my mind. I am the Superstar of my Graduation Night !

When I entered in College, I graduated as Cum Laude because of ATE GUY ! And now that I am already a Professor of the great ATENEO, I truly agree that MISS NORA AUNOR is the "MOST EFFECTIVE MEDIUM and a GREAT VISUAL AID" in the ACADEME, for when I am Teaching BUSINESS ETHICS, I used the Film "MINSA'Y ISANG GAMU-GAMO" and I let my Ateneans to analyze the Unethical Practices in the Philippines portrayed in the Film. When I am teaching ECOTOURISM: MANAGING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT I discuss ATE GUY's CLASSIC FILM "BANAUE", my Ateneans applauded ATE GUY's great Performance in that Film and of course the Story ! And when I am handling "MARKETING: PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES" most especially on the Topics which are PEOPLE MARKETING and of THE PRODUCT LIFE CYCLE MODEL I tell NORA AUNOR's BIOGRAPHY for them to relate that in my Marketing Topics. And when I am handling "BRAND MANAGEMENT" Ate Guy is always a Perfect Example ! With a great Brand Name! and with a Superb MARKETING PROWESS ! I can still recall that when I discussed "COCA COLA", I even bring with me inside my Class a Big PRINT OUT PICTURE of MISS NORA AUNOR holding a Bottle of Coke, for Ate Guy is once a COMMERCIAL ENDORSER of that great and Superstar Beverage !!!

Currently, Ate Guy, I can't thank you enough of your TREMENDOUS EFFECT in my LIFE !!!! YOU ARE INDEED A PHENOMENAL SUPERSTAR !!!! You are still my SUPERSTAR IN THE DARKNESS OF THE NIGHT !!!! and it will be FOREVER !!!!

I LOVE YOU MAMA GUY !!! NORA PA RIN !!!! and Advance HAPPY BIRTHDAY po ! Mabuhay ka aking DYOSA !!!!

MABUHAY LA AUNOR !!!!! IS A KANG TUNAY NA ALAMAT !!!! (",)
